Once upon a time in the state of hornbill, there were two princesses who were extremely beautiful. The two princesses were named Princess Santubongand Princess Sejinjang.

Princess Santubong and Princess Sejinjang came from fairyland. Before they came to the earth, they had promised the king that they would never fight. Princess Santubong was given the mandate to rule Pasir Kuning while Princess Sejinjang rule Pasir Putih. The people in the villages welcomed their arrival and they soon became more prosperous. They were ordered to keep the peace in both villages besides helping them. The beautiful woven cloths made by Princess Santubong were much admired by the merchants. Princess Sejinjang was loved as she  often helped the villagers pounding rice.

As the time went by, there were more people from neighbouring states came to Sarawak. One of the visitors was Prince Serapi from Matang. Princess Santubong fell in love with Prince Serapi. Unfortunately, at the same time, Princess Sejinjang fell in love with Prince Serapi too. Princess Santubong was not pleased with this. She was worried that Prince Serapi will eventually fall in love with Princess Sejinjang.

Princess Santubong got angry and scolded Princess Sejinjang. They quarreled very badly and their people also began to attack each other. Princess Sejinjang swung a club and hit Princess Santubong’s cheek. Princess Santubong paid her back by striking Princess Sejinjang on the head with heavy stick. Suddenly, white blood flowed out of their wounds.

The Princesses had broken their promise. All of sudden, the lightning flashed along with a loud thunder. The king was furious. It was then the Princesses were cursed. Princess Santubong turned into mountain. Her cheek made the mountain to be chipped on one side. On the other hand, Princess Sejinjang’s head broke into pieces. The pieces was scattered. and became Kera Island, Satang Island and Talang-talang Island.

To date, Mount Santubong and the Islands are still exist in Sarawak. And they have become tourist attraction.

Moral values:  We shall not quarrel with our own relatives just because of trivial matter. We must also keep our promise.

Princess Santubong

Puteri Santubong Lyrics

Oh Puteri Santubong,

(Oh Princess Santubong)

Sejinjang sayang

(Lovely Sejinjang)

Kisah lama, Zaman mensia maya

(The story of ancient time)

Puteri Santubong, Puteri Sejinjang,

(Princess Santubong, Princess Sejinjang)

Penjaga gunung Negeri Sarawak,

(The guardians of Sarawak)

Manis sik ada dapat dilawan,

(Imcomparable beauty)

Anak dak Dewa turun kayangan

(Daughters of King from the Heaven)

Oh Santubong puteri bertenun kain malam

(Santubong weaved clothes at the night)

Oh Sejinjang puteri menumbuk padi siang

(Sejinjang ground rice at the day)

Satu hari nya dua kelahi,

(One day, the two quarreled)

Beranuk anuk sik renti-renti,

(Arguing without stopping)

Seorang madah dirik bagus agik,

(One said herself beautiful than the other)

Seorang sik ngalah walau sampai ke mati

(One did not want to lose even if death make her to)

Udah lejuk nya duak kelahi,

(When they were already tired of arguing)

Lalu bertukuk nya duak puteri,

(They hit each other)

Sejinjang mengayun aluk ke pipi,

(Sejinjang hit Santubong on the cheek with a club)

Tebik Santubong sampai gituk ari.

(Santubong fell and injured)

Tapi Santubong membalas juak,

(But Santubong did not give up)

Lalu ditikam batang belidak,

(She hit Sejinjang with a heavy stick)

Sampei terkena Sejinjang kepala,

(It hit her head)

Lalu bertabor jadi Pulo Kera

(And Sejinjang turned into Kera Island)

Kisah Santubong, kisah Sejinjang,

(The story of Santubong and Sejinjang)

Asal berkawan jadi musuhan,

(Whom were friends then enemies)

Kinik tuk tinggal jadi kenangan,

(Has become a remembrance)

Pakei ingatan sepanjang zaman.

(And being a lesson for people today)
